AAU Graduation Fashion Show designers feature collections inspired by the Tenderloin neighborhood, architecture, Alice in Wonderland, geometry and much more. Do these designers have what it takes to become the next industry leaders?

We all look up to famous fashion designers as innovative and creative powerhouses for the fashion industry, but one should not forget that they too had to start somewhere. So when fashion visionaries, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte were both honored last Wednesday with an Honorary Doctorate degree from The Academy of Art University and Certificate of Honor from the Office of the Mayor of San Francisco, Mayor Edwin M. Lee, I knew this was another successful year for the School of Fashion of the Academy of Art University. Up until last week, I used to think the San Francisco fashion scene was a dying breed. Sure, we cannot compare most San Francisco fashion events to that of New York but, the Graduation Fashion Show presented by the Academy of Art University was so close that it gives me a glimpse hope for San Francisco’s potential to become a fashion capital.
Menswear designers stole the show with a take on modern and sporty influences drawn from urban streetwear. San Francisco native and menswear designer Justin Moreno and textile designer Namrata Bhandari collaborated on a collection that encompasses feminine and masculine elements in unison with streetwear. Through abstract florals on oversized hoodies and grayish, fem jumpsuits these pieces are well worth noting for its relaxed, San Francisco demeanor.
The show overall had a New York Fashion Week feel and student’s hard work was expressed so greatly it is unforgettable. Since this was their Graduation Fashion Show it'll be interesting to see which of these emerging designers will be following the footsteps of leaders like Kate and Laura Mulleavy to become our next creative powerhouses for the industry. It is important to remember that our leaders of tomorrow have to start somewhere. Congratulations to Academy of Art University’s graduating class of 2016.
