Sneak Peek To This Year's Featured Designers
Lisa Jones aka Tailored Gypsy is killing it as an emerging designer, and even though she has more than 17 years of experience in corporate fashion, costume and textiles industries working with brands — including Ralph Lauren, Guess, Timberland, Athleta, Teatro Zinzanni, globally in Italy, France, and Morocco — she is off on a whole new adventure mission with her own emerging brands: a solid balance of successful business strategy and design expertise, combined with hands-on experience, results in salty, savvy, innovative designs, solutions and products.
Four year ago, Lisa Jones launched, Tailored Gypsy, a venture of divine and decadent details and a reverence for exemplary technical modalities; the result: soulfully beautiful and functional added-value pieces for women. In 2013, Throckmorton Jones launched as a response to men's request for quality leather products.
Intensely deep, pulsing drumming and rhythmic chanting fill the dark air of The Crucible with ardor, the intensity is exciting and the anticipation is palpable. The drumming and chanting sets the "tone" for the crowd to be impassioned, empowered and excited to be alive.
The roaring and passionate sounds of drumming and chanting quiets ... as a clear harmonious voice begins to spill spoken word from the audio while the ancient Egyptian gods of Energy, Wisdom, Kindness and Death walk the stage/runway... transmuting the observers burning minds in to passionately alive and knowing hearts as the spoken words of deeply wise and knowing poets brings back to life some of mankind's most inspirational messages.
The ancient gods walk the stage in their massive costume and burning staffs in a valiant effort to capture the attention of the audience and transmute their fear into passionate warmth, disconnected hearts into active community, apathy into fierce compassion until they are boiling over with SPIRIT eager to love, to accept, to trust to BE.
Returning Hot Couture Designer Alexandra Candia of Candia Designs has a strong reputation of staying true to her designs, and intensely researching trends in fashion and dancewear around the world (specifically Carnaval-oriented themes) to keep her costumes fresh and exciting. She loves to create a world of fantasia with her dancewear which respect the culture and heritage of Brazil and incorporate global fashion and design. Alexandra hopes to continue to evolve and create beautiful costumes that are firmly rooted in tradition, yet modern and exciting.
"Dreams of the Alchemist" a collection inspired by the all influential and inspiring dreams which evoked a spiritual system of eternal and esoteric symbols to use in the physical practice of alchemy. 'Sonhos do Alquimista' share a vision of the potential beauty and mysticism these dreams must have presented, a vision of splendor, grandeur and ever changing beauty in all its forms. Each of the 7 looks in the Candia Designs collection for Hot Couture 2016 is a dream vision of the elements that are principle to alchemic traditions. Staying true to form, the designs are a stunning vision of Carnaval and fantasia, with an array of feathers, impressive headpieces and backpieces, and tailored dance styles.
•With Alex’s strong background in the carnaval experience, this collection will be underscored by the pulsating, live drumming of the traditional Brazilian bateria.
•Fogo Na Roupa, the award-winning Brazilian performing company that is based in SF Bay Area will be sharing their infectious samba rhythms and energy for Hot Couture. (www.gofogo.com)
•Alexandra is currently lead designer and a dance instructor with Fogo Na Roupa
"I present my theme in Portugues (Sonhos do Alquimista) since I come to Hot Couture presenting definitely a Brazilian experience, with respect to the styles of costumes, dance and music, and I want to ensure the that theme reflects that direction as well.
"The models I will use and have used for the past two years in Hot Couture are performance dancers from Fogo Na Roupa. Rather than walk down the runway, they dance and perform, showcasing how best my designs can be presented. Since they are specifically dance costumes, it is important to me that they are presented as such. Included in my model team is the Dance Director of Fogo Na Roupa, Metzi Henriquez."
Scatha G. Allison (with Domini Anne, Sophia Constance, Dawson Engler, Shabnam Q and Amanda Sage)
The True Alchemy Collection is a story of 12 beauties, archetypes, muses and mystics. The collection is a pure collaboration of ideas and musings of the theme Alchemy & Ardor: a moving, living, breathing art experience. Miss Velvet Cream has shown collections at Hot Couture in 2008, 2014 and 2015, and returns with a collaborative runway show with a powerhouse team of talent, skills, and interdisciplinary art and design histories.
Visionary painter Amanda Sage and textile and clothing artist Shabnam Q. collaboratively printed a range of gorgeous fabrics of Amanda's paintings with a facility in DTLA. These fabrics have all been transformed into wearable art clothing pieces by Scatha G. Allison, Domini Anne and Shabnam Q. Each outfit is highlighted by leather and metal body couture created by Dawson Engler for Dao Pow Industries, who also showed with MVC at Hot Couture 2015. Sophia Constance, the returning Hot Couture artist and performer has created a story of headpieces, masks and a fantastical creature from the depths of Imagination.
All pieces have been designed and constructed by the artists in their studios, working only from a collective mood board, language and poetry. The True Alchemy Collection is a pure expression of art and collaboration, capturing a moment that can only be experienced live as all the elements come together at Hot Couture. See each of the artist's work and more information about their process on their websites and social media presence.
TRUE ALCHEMY COLLECTION
The True Alchemy Collection is a collaborative project between 6 artists and designers based in 5 different California cities.
The 12 look collection combines fabrics and hand painting from artist Amanda Sage with designers Scatha G. Allison, Domini Anne and Shabnam Q. creating one of a kind, neo-couture wearable art pieces. Dawson Engler brings luxury leathers and metal body adornments matched to each of the outfits, and performance artist and leatherworker Sophia Constance completes each character with handworked leather headpieces.
The designs of the collection are a reflection of the process of Alchemy, starting with a dark, moody and warrior-like series of looks. In the midst of this story appears a Creature of the Imagination performed by Sophia Constance. She brings the essence of transformation and all the looks following shine with a golden lightness, radiating, transformed into Gold.
The collection as a story, is in itself an alchemical moment. Looks are combinations of textile prints and paintings, as well as luxury fabrics, and pieces by each of the designers are combined together to create outfits that are both commanding and visionary in their presence. The feeling is one of a mystical combination of cultures and ancient stories, and at the same time sharply modern, with strong, elegant lines; exquisite craftsmanship, and beautiful, wearable clothing.
